Alfred’s Monthly Recommendation
For a long time now, I have prided myself into thinking that I make the best pasta sauce from far and wide. “Nothing from a jar” I’d always say. Boy, am I wrong! Last week I came home and was just too tired to whip up a sauce. I remembered that I had a bottle of our Napoli Vodka Cream Sauce in my car, so I got it and heated it up. Tossing it over some Napoli Rigatoni, I could not believe what I was eating. It was better than my own sauce! Much better! The next day I tried the Basil Sauce. The following day I tried the Spicy Sicilian Fra Diavolo Sauce. Down the line I went, sampling every single sauce that we have. Unbelievable. This product now gets my highest recommendation. So, next time you want an authentic pasta sauce, without the work of homemade, try any of these Napoli sauces. I am positive that they, too, will be your favorite! No Kidding! |

Italian News Flash!
Italians are in love with Facebook. I cannot believe how many friends that I now have because of Facebook. Every day I communicate with lovely people from all over Italy and my friends list gets bigger and bigger!
They sent me funny clips from Italian television, which I, in turn, pass on to my American friends. They keep me posted on major news events, and we talk about everyday life there. My Italian grammar is terrible but still we seem to communicate very well.
I became a fan of “La Sicilia” on Facebook, an organization that has thousands of members, and every day I am sent breathe-taking photos from all over the Island. Join!
Break Through!
(From ANSA): Italian researchers have shown how a cheap analysis procedure can be used to detect leukemia in children early and spare them costly chemotherapy. The study has been published in the prestigious Journal of Clinical Oncology, where it was described as ''impressive'' by one of the world's top leukemia experts, Ching-Hon Pui.
In this study, researchers in Florence, Padua, and Monza examined hundreds of children with a technique called flow cytometry, where cells are blasted with electrons to see if they contain anomalies. The technique spotted the early signs of a disease called acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in which white blood cells crowd out normal cells in the bone marrow and cause damage and death.
“This new method enables us to identify the prognosis of the young patient in a matter of days, allowing us to map out the proper treatment,” said the study, performed under the aegis of the Italian Association for Pediatric Oncologic Hematology.
Sicilians at Risk Due To Economy
(ANSA) - Rome, October 8 - Over three million people in Italy cannot afford to feed themselves, an Italian food bank reported Thursday. The study, by Milan University researchers, showed that 4.4% of Italian families live so far beneath the poverty line that they run the risk of hunger.
According to the study, presented at a conference on poverty at Rome's City Hall, the problem is most widespread on the islands of Sicily and Sardinia where one in ten residents live under the poverty line.
A Little Good Sicilian Economic News
The European Commission approved 2.4 billion of tax credits (approx. $3.6 billion USD) for Sicily saying the package did not break EU competition rules. The Italian government wants to boost business on the island by easing credit for start-ups between 2009 and 2013.
Better News J (But It’s Calabria!)
Italian prostitutes can have home help as long as it isn't a permanent service, Italy's top appeals court said. The Cassation Court, whose rulings set precedents, turned down an appeal against the acquittal of a waiter accused of helping sex workers in a small town in Calabria. Vincenzo R. was found to have brought water, towels, and clean sheets to a group of prostitutes working out of their homes. Abetting prostitution and living off sex workers’ earnings is a crime in Italy, but it is not against the law to sell sex. |
| Sicilian News Flash!
The rains came these last few weeks, and Messina really got hit bad, as you can see in this clip from You Tube. Over forty people died in mudslides and hundreds were left homeless.
The people from Messina are a tough breed, though, and will recover from this tragedy. Back in the early 20thcentury a devastating earthquake hit Messina. During World War II, the whole city was almost leveled by Allied bombing. And, in the early 1950’s, another devastating earthquake killed tens of thousands of people there.
Still, they persevere. I will check it out when I get there in three weeks. |
| All Things Sicilian Man of the Year!
Bet you didn’t know that we have our very own version of the Renaissance man living right here in Boston, did you? Yup. And we have chosen him as the 2009 All Thing Sicilian’s “Man Of The Year.” Let me tell you a little about this treasure, this jewel. Someday, you will remember that I wrote these words. Leonardo is that talented, that gifted. Introducing Leonardo Ciampa, in my opinion, a musical genius and a gem of a human being.
I love Leonardo. A lot. Born in 1971, composer/organist/pianist Leonardo Ciampa is acknowledged as one of the most gifted and versatile musicians of his generation. His compositions, which are considered “neoromatic” in style, include “The Annunciation Op. 23” (cantata for chorus and strings), “Suite Siciliana Op. 14” (for violins, piano and orchestra), five organ recitals, a concerto for piano and organ, a piano quintet, and numerous sacred works. His works are published exclusively by CIC (Compositorum.com). Several years ago, the Boston Globe wrote, “Genius is a word that pops up in conversations about Leonardo Ciampa.”
Leonardo has made seven European tours throughout Italy, Germany, and Austria; and has also played in many International festivals. He currently directs the Chapel Organ Series at MIT in Boston, and I urge you to attend one of his concerts (he posts his schedule on his website www.leonardociampa.com .
For good measure, he has also written two books, The Twilight of Bel Canto and Don Lorenzo Perosi, and has a popular blog (faultbook.blogsspot.com)and Facebook page too! Whew!
Again, I love Leo. To me he is the essence of a pure soul. We have known each other for years and I treasure his friendship. Most importantly, Leo is of Sicilian origin and a true and genuine person. Bravo!
This month…Italian Cultural Heritage Month…we are pleased to announce Leonardo Ciampa as All Things Sicilian’s Man of The Year. And no one deserves it more. Truly a remarkable person…Thank you for being Sicilian, Leonardo!
Ciao! Alfred |
